In 1964, following the release of the latest James bond movie Goldfinger, rumours were rife that an actress died after she was covered head to toe in gold paint.
Actress Shirley Eaton was covered all over in gold paint for her role as Jill Masterson. In the film it was explained that as the body breathes through the skin she would suffocate. This however is a myth, but to this day many still think the actress actually died during filming. Bizarrely the film makers themselves started to believe their own storyline leaving a patch of unpainted skin on the actresses back, just in case!
Generally what appears to be gold paint on a picture or portrait is gold leaf. Gold bullion is hammered down to extremely thin sheets. This process is called gilding. Gold is extremely malleable so it can also be molded into gold bullion bars and coins.
