Gold Bullion Found Under the Sea

As demand by investors to buy gold bullion increases, the pressure is on globally for more gold to be mined. Some consider the solution to be laying deep under the ocean in the sea bed.

As gold continues to become more scarce, scientists are looking to the sea bed to see just how much gold is actually hidden there. Mining for gold under the sea presents a whole host of problems however, but earlier this year a New Zealand mining company, Seafield Resources, claimed that there is large amounts of gold bullion in the sea bed off the West Coast of New Zealand. Research is under way using special drilling equipment, leased from the South African diamond mine company De Beers, which they hope will make research easier to assess whether this is a viable operation.

Green Peace opposes mining of the sea bed due to the possible environmental problems that may arise. Seawater maybe an alternative as particles of gold have been identified as being in seawater as far back as 1872. The largest concentration of gold has been found in the Bering Sea in Russia.
