The history of the gold sovereigns dates back to 1489 when the first gold coin of this nature was issued with gold sovereigns still being minted today. The original sovereign was produced in the reign of King Henry VII and it is still possible to buy gold sovereigns dating back centuries.

In 1604 gold sovereigns were stopped being minted and it wasn't until 1817 that they were reintroduced. Originally they were always made out of 22 carat gold, which became known as and still is the gold standard in the UK and USA. Gold sovereigns are minted around the world notably in Melbourne, Bombay and Pretoria. In the UK they are produced at the Royal Mint in Wales.

Gold sovereigns are popular among collectors and investors alike. Modern gold sovereigns are also available to buy as half sovereigns. Not only is there much interest for these coins for investment purposes but also as a collectable numismatic gold coin.
