Design of the South African Krugerrand
The front (obverse) of the South African Krugerrand , was designed by O. Schultz and is embossed with an image of the first President of the South African Republic, Paul Kruger. The name of his country curves around his image in both English and Afrikaans: two of South Africa's many official languages: "SOUTH AFRICA | SUID-AFRIKA".
C.L. Steynberg designed the back (reverse) showing a South African antelope (springbok) prancing from left to right. The back also lists the year of issue and the purity and weight of the gold. The South African Krugerrand does not show a monetary value because it is mainly produced for buying and selling outside of South Africa.
The South African Krugerrand Coin Mint
The mint in South African has plenty of gold for use in its coin production as South Africa is one of the world's biggest gold producers. Every Krugerrand is created using about 91 2/3 parts gold and 8 1/3 parts copper. The authorised Mint of South African has encountered numerous adjustments over the years since it was established in 1892 by the National Bank and was privatised in 1988 when it became a full subsidiary of the South African Reserve Bank.
The weight of a Krugerrand coin is 1.0909 troy ounces (33093 g), it is 32.6 mm in diameter and 2.74 mm thick. It is minted from gold alloy that is 91.67% pure which is 22 karats, so the coin contains one troy ounce (31.1035g) of gold. The remaining weight of the coin is copper; this makes up 8.33% of the coins weight. The Krugerrand’s orange appearance comes from the copper in the coin historically known as the crown gold which has long been used for English sovereign coins.
