The gold Ducat is introduced in Venice.  It became one of the most popular coins in the world for 500 years.

At the same time, Great Britain issed its first major gold coin, the Florin.  The issue of other gold coins followed shortly, like the Noble and later the Angel, Crown and Guinea.

Great Britain changes to a monetary system founded on gold and silver.

1556 A.D.
in this year, De re Metallica was published by Georgious Agricola.  It described the state of the art of mining, refining and smelting metals.  The book remained the most authoritaivie text about mining for 250 years after its initial publication.
