King Ferdinand of Spain launches ruthless expeditions to the newly discovered lands of the Western Hemisphere in the pursuit of gold.

1556 A.D.
in this year, De re Metallica was published by Georgious Agricola.  It described the state of the art of mining, refining and smelting metals.  The book remained the most authoritaivie text about mining for 250 years after its initial publication.
